Indeed, you have to be careful in complimenting an Arab man\u2019s tie, lest you go home with the tie in hand upon leaving your new friend.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, complimenting an Arab\u2019s car right before he gets into a small fender bender at Amman\u2019s Dachlea Circle and you could get blamed for the accident,&nbsp;so be careful when handing out compliments in the Arab world. Here are some other tips when handing out compliments in the Arab world:<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-1-start-your-complimentary-sentence-with-mashallah\">1. Start your complimentary sentence with \u201cmashallah\u201d\u2026<\/h2>\n<p>Be sure to utter \u201c<em>mashallah<\/em>\u201d (\u201cGod has willed it\u201d) at the beginning of each compliment to ward off any bad intentions, perceived or otherwise. And is actually part of the Arabic religion. Otherwise, anything that can go wrong and will go wrong will be blamed on you.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-2-and-end-it-with-smallah\">2. \u2026And end it with \u201csmallah\u201d<\/h2>\n<p><em>Smallah<\/em><strong>, <\/strong>meaning \u201chold the envy\u201d and \u201csave the evil eye\u201d is generally to praise a baby or something that\u2019s pretty darn cute. Where <strong>\u201c<\/strong><em>mashallah<\/em>\u201d is to ward off the evil eye, \u201c<em>smallah<\/em>\u201d is a direct poke in the eye to chase it away altogether.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-3-knock-on-wood\">3. Knock on Wood<\/h2>\n<p>This tradition of either Celtic or German origin to invoke the help and protection of the fairies living in trees, somehow also found its way into Arabic tradition as well. Find something of wood to knock on immediately upon uttering \u201csmallah\u201d above and you\u2019ll be good to go. Don\u2019t, however, try to fake it by pretending you\u2019re a woodenhead and knocking on your noggin. It\u2019s not the same thing and not funny to the believers of the tradition, either.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-4-sneak-both-yekhze-el-ein-and-allah-yehmeek-yahmeeki-for-the-females-into-the-compliment\">4. Sneak both \u201cyekhze el ein\u201d and \u201cAllah yehmeek\u201d (\u201cyahmeeki\u201d for the females) into the compliment<\/h2>\n<p>This former (\u201c<em>yekhze el ein<\/em>\u201d&nbsp;) is for when you\u2019re really fed up with those envious eyes showing up all around your compliment and \u201c<em>Allah yemeek\u201d <\/em>meaning \u201cMay God protect you\u201d keeps them coming back for good.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-5-commenting-on-someone-s-weight-even-weight-loss-is-not-a-compliment\">5. Commenting on someone\u2019s weight (even weight loss) is not a compliment<\/h2>\n<p>Another piece of advice is that you should never talk about weight \u2013 even if you\u2019re trying to compliment somebody on their weight loss. There are many other Arab traits and characteristics that you can compliment someone on, so pick one of those. Even if you say, \u201cMy goodness, Muna, you look beautiful now that you\u2019ve lost all that weight,\u201d Muna will take it to mean, \u201cMy goodness, Muna, you don\u2019t look as big as a house anymore,\u201d no matter your intentions.<\/p>\n<p>So to revise, a proper compliment in Arabic would go something like:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExcuse me, Omar, but, <em>mashallah<\/em>, I just have to say, <em>yekhze el ein<\/em>, that is the most beautiful tie that I have seen in quite awhile. <em>Allah yemeek<\/em>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.kaleelah.com\/blog\/colors-in-arabic-the-most-used-words-in-everyday-conversation\/\">colors<\/a> are gorgeous, <em>smallah<\/em>!\u201d<em>*Knock!
