Arabic conjunctions, referred to as \u201c\u0639\u0637\u0641\u201d <em>\/atf\/, <\/em>are fixed and limited. Here is the only list of conjunctions in Arabic Grammar you will ever need.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-wa\">\u201c\u0648\u201d \/wa\/<\/h2>\n<p>What is the number one conjunction that everyone is guilty of over-using? It\u2019s \u201cand\u201d. Arab speakers do so too. It is used to combine two subjects, verbs, phrases or clauses.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"h-example-1\">Example 1:<\/h4>\n<p>The girls and boys went outside. <\/p>\n<p>\u0627\u0644\u0628\u0646\u0627\u062a \u0648 \u0627\u0644\u0623\u0648\u0644\u0627\u062f \u0630\u0647\u0628\u0648\u0627 \u0644\u0644\u062e\u0627\u0631\u062c  <em>\/al banat wal awlad thahabo lil kharij\/<\/em><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"h-example-2\">Example 2:<\/h4>\n<p>The woman cut and ate fruits.<\/p>\n<p>\u0627\u0644\u0645\u0631\u0623\u0629 \u0642\u0637\u0651\u0639\u062a \u0648 \u0623\u0643\u0644\u062a \u0627\u0644\u0641\u0648\u0627\u0643\u0647 \/al mar\u2019a qata\u2019at wa akalat al fawakih\/<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-fa\">\u201c\u0641\u201d \/fa\/<\/h2>\n<p>This is equivalent to the conjunction \u201cthen\u201d or \u201cso\u201d and is used for a number of purposes including: stating a consequence, ordering, and sequencing.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"h-example-1-1\">Example 1:<\/h4>\n<p>Mohammed wrote then Sarah.<\/p>\n<p>\u0643\u062a\u0628 \u0645\u062d\u0645\u062f \u0641\u0633\u0627\u0631\u0629 <em>\/kataba Mohammed fa Sarah\/<\/em><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"h-example-2-1\">Example 2:<\/h4>\n<p>He worked hard so he succeeded.<\/p>\n<p>\u0627\u062c\u062a\u0647\u062f \u0641\u0646\u062c\u062d &nbsp;<em>\/ijtahada fa najah\/<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-la\">\u201c\u0644\u0627\u201d \/la\/<\/h2>\n<p>This conjunction is used for negative cases so it refers to the words \u201cnot\u201d, \u201cneither\u201d, and \u201cnor\u201d. The words followed by <em>\/la\/ <\/em>are a negative statement of what the sentence begins with.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"h-example\">Example:<\/h4>\n<p>Sarah wrote, not Mohammed.<\/p>\n<p>\u0633\u0627\u0631\u0629 \u0643\u062a\u0628\u062a \u0644\u0627 \u0645\u062d\u0645\u062f <em>\/Sarah katabat la Mohammed\/<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-thumma\">\u201c\u062b\u0645\u201d \/thumma\/<\/h2>\n<p>This conjunction is also used for ordering and sequencing, however, it places a certain delay in the consequential action. It is the equivalence of \u201clater\u201d or \u201cthen later\u201d in more specific cases.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"h-example-1-2\">Example 1:<\/h4>\n<p>Sarah went then later Mohammed.<\/p>\n<p>\u0630\u0647\u0628\u062a \u0633\u0627\u0631\u0629 \u062b\u0645 \u0645\u062d\u0645\u062f <em>\/thahabat Sarah thumma Mohammed\/<\/em><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"h-example-2-2\">Example 2:<\/h4>\n<p>I saw my friend then I went home.<\/p>\n<p>\u0631\u0623\u064a\u062a \u0635\u062f\u064a\u0642\u064a \u062b\u0645 \u0630\u0647\u0628\u062a \u0625\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0628\u064a\u062a <em>\/ra\u2019ayto sadeeki thumma thahabto ela al bait\/<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-hatta\">\u201c\u062d\u062a\u0651\u0649\u201d \/hatta\/<\/h2>\n<p>In English, <em>\/hatta\/ <\/em>is used similarly to \u201ceven\u201d. This conjunction has two opposing uses depending on the context: elevation or subjugation.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"h-example-1-3\">Example 1:<\/h4>\n<p>Everyone cleaned even the boss.<\/p>\n<p>\u0646\u0638\u0641 \u0627\u0644\u062c\u0645\u064a\u0639 \u062d\u062a\u0651\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0645\u062f\u064a\u0631 <em>\/nathafa al jamee\u2019 hatta al mudeer\/<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"h-example-2-3\">Example 2:<\/h4>\n<p>The employees failed even their best.<\/p>\n<p>\u0641\u0634\u0644 \u0627\u0644\u0645\u0648\u0638\u0641\u064a\u0646 \u062d\u062a\u0651\u0649 \u0623\u0641\u0636\u0644\u0647\u0645 <em>\/fashala al muwathafeen hatta afdaluhom\/<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-aw\">\u201c\u0623\u0648\u201d \/aw\/<\/h2>\n<p>This is another easy one, and is commonly referred to as \u201cor\u201d in English. As the case in English,<em> \/aw\/ <\/em>is used to express doubt, ambiguity, choice, or consent depending on the context.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"h-example-1-doubt\">Example 1: Doubt<\/h4>\n<p>Something broke: the cup or bowl.<\/p>\n<p>\u0627\u0646\u0643\u0633\u0631 \u0634\u064a\u0626\u060c \u0627\u0644\u0643\u0623\u0633 \u0623\u0648 \u0627\u0644\u0635\u062d\u0646 <em>\/inkasara shay\u2019 al ka\u2019s aw al sahn\/<\/em><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"h-example-2-ambiguity\">Example 2: Ambiguity<\/h4>\n<p>Her friend is here or there.<\/p>\n<p>\u0635\u062f\u064a\u0642\u062a\u0647\u0627 \u0647\u0646\u0627 \u0623\u0648 \u0647\u0646\u0627\u0643 <em>\/sadeekatuha huna aw hunak\/<\/em><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"h-example-3-choice\">Example 3: Choice<\/h4>\n<p>Eat pie or cake.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u0643\u0644 \u0641\u0637\u064a\u0631\u0629 \u0623\u0648 \u0643\u0639\u0643\u0629 <em>\/kul fateera aw ka\u2019kaa\/<\/em><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"h-example-4-consent\">Example 4: Consent<\/h4>\n<p>He can walk or run.<\/p>\n<p>\u064a\u0645\u0643\u0646\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0645\u0634\u064a \u0623\u0648 \u0627\u0644\u0631\u0643\u0636 <em>\/yumkinoho al mashi aw al rakd\/<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-lakin\">\u201c\u0644\u0643\u0646\u201d \/lakin\/<\/h2>\n<p>Another commonly used conjunction, in both Arabic and English, universally known as \u201cbut\u201d. <em>\/lakin\/ <\/em>is used for negative statements.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"h-example-1-4\">Example 1:<\/h4>\n<p>Sarah didn\u2019t go out but Mohammed did.<\/p>\n<p>\u0645\u0627 \u0630\u0647\u0628\u062a \u0633\u0627\u0631\u0629 \u0644\u0643\u0646 \u0645\u062d\u0645\u062f <em>\/ma thahabat Sarah lakin Mohammed\/<\/em><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"h-example-2-4\">Example 2:<\/h4>\n<p>Mohammed cleaned the room but not the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u0646\u0638\u0641 \u0645\u062d\u0645\u062f \u0627\u0644\u063a\u0631\u0641\u0629 \u0644\u0643\u0646 \u0644\u0645 \u064a\u0646\u0638\u0641 \u0627\u0644\u0637\u0627\u0648\u0644\u0629 <em>\/nathafa Mohammed al ghorfa lakin lam yunathif al taawila\/<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-bal\">\u201c\u0628\u0644\u201d \/bal\/<\/h2>\n<p>This conjunction is used to state rejection for the first part of the sentence, and confirm the second part, similarly to the words \u201crather\u201d or \u201cmore accurately\u201d in English.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"h-example-3\">Example:<\/h4>\n<p>I played basketball, rather football in school.<\/p>\n<p>\u0644\u0639\u0628\u062a \u0643\u0631\u0629 \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0644\u0629 \u0628\u0644 \u0643\u0631\u0629 \u0627\u0644\u0642\u062f\u0645 \u0641\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0645\u062f\u0631\u0633\u0629  <em>\/la\u2019ibtu kurat al sallah bal kurrat al qadam fil madrasa\/<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-am\">\u201c\u0623\u0645\u201d \/am\/<\/h2>\n<p>Although there was one \u201cor\u201d stated earlier, this is another. The only difference with <em>\/am\/ <\/em>is that it is used in yes-no interrogative statements.
