To learn vowels is to learn to speak\u2026 says Kaleela. Well, we obviously just made this up. BUT, we all know how important it is to use and say vowels <\/a>properly. Imagine telling someone you look fat, instead of fit. It is a life or death situation. There are known Arabic long vowels that we are going to breakdown through examples, one by one. This is an easy Arabic vowels lesson for beginners.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s start with the vowels meaning in Arabic, which is harakat for short vowels, written \u062d\u0631\u0643\u0627\u062a, and harf illa for long vowels, written \u062d\u0631\u0641 \u0639\u0644\u0629.<\/p>\n

Alif<\/h2>\n

We all know it is the first letter of the alphabet, but it also happens to be the first long vowel in the Arabic language.<\/p>\n

Phonetically speaking, alif, written \u0627\u0644\u0641, is represented like this \/\u0101\/. The short vowel \/a\/ is taken from the Arabic vowel \/\u0101\/. The word \u201csat\u201d is a perfect example for this long vowel.<\/p>\n

Alif is presented like this: \u0627<\/p>\n

For example, the letter \u0641is pronounced \/fa\u2019\/<\/em>, however, with the long vowel alif, it becomes \u0641\u0627 pronounced \/f\u0101 \/. <\/em>It takes the letter up. Let\u2019s look at an example:<\/p>\n

Waw<\/h2>\n

Our second long vowel is waw.<\/p>\n

Waw, \u0648\u0627\u0648, is the long \/u\/ sound, represented like this \/\u016b\/. For example, the word \u201cspoon\u201d sounds out the \/\u016b\/ sound. This vowel is written like this: \u0648<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s take the same letter \u0641, pronounced \/fa\u2019\/<\/em>, and add our second long vowel \u0648\u0627\u0648, it becomes \u0641\u0648 pronounced \/f\u016b \/. <\/em>It forces the lips to be rounded in order to make the sound properly. The short vowel damma is taken from the long vowel waw. Here is the example:  <\/p>\n

Notice that this example has both the waw and alif long vowels, respectively.  <\/p>\n

Ya<\/h2>\n

Last but not least, the ya long vowel. <\/p>\n

Represented using \/\u012b\/ symbol, Ya or\u064a\u0627\u0621, is the third and last long vowel in the Arabic language. The exact sound can be heard in the word \u201cdeep\u201d and it is written like this: \u064a<\/p>\n

Again, we are going to take the letter \u0641. We will see that it transforms from \/fa\u2019\/<\/em> into \/f\u012b<\/em>\/ once we add the \u064a vowel to it. The short vowel kasra is taken from this long vowel. Let take a look at the example:<\/p>\n
