If you ever have
\na chance to visit the Kingdom of Jordan, more than likely someone will invite
\nyou\u2026 wait. Let me rephrase that. If you don\u2019t do anything else in this life, go
\nto Jordan and eat mansaf<\/em>. Put it on your bucket list, on your wish list,
\non your calendar \u2013 whatever you have to do! Just go to Jordan and eat mansaf!<\/p>\n

Look, you don\u2019t have to eat only mansaf if you go to Jordan because there are plenty of Jordanian food<\/a> options available, but trust me on this one. Try it one time.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll thank me
\nlater.<\/p>\n

What is this Jordanian mansaf I speak about?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Mansaf is the pride of Jordan \u2013 after all, it is Jordan\u2019s national dish \u2013 and a delicious dish of rice, lamb, a special dried and fermented goat yoghurt known as jameed<\/em>, almonds, and a type of bread called shrak<\/em> in the local Arab dialect. However, mansaf is about more than just its delicious taste. (\u201cHow does mansaf taste?\u201d you might ask. Well, one critic actually said it tastes like Jordan); it\u2019s also such an important part of Jordanian culture, that it has resolved conflicts and restored peace among the tribes in the Kingdom. Of course, you\u2019ll also see it at Jordanian celebrations, parties, family gatherings, and festivals.<\/p>\n

The yellow fragrant rice, topped with extremely tender pieces of lamb scattered on top, sprinkled with a good handful of fried pine nuts or sliced almonds is usually served on a large communal metal platter with bowls jameed<\/em> on the side.<\/p>\n

How to eat mansaf<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Now it\u2019s time to get serious because Jordanians take mansaf very seriously. Therefore, here are a few things you need to know before you dig in: <\/p>\n

1. Stand <\/strong><\/h4>\n

If you\u2019ve been
\ninvited to someone\u2019s house, you might have to stand when you eat. This way you
\nmake more space for other guests to fit around the table. If you\u2019re eating
\nmansaf alone in a restaurant, please don\u2019t stand.<\/p>\n

2. Mark your territory<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Let the person
\nstanding on your left and on your right know which area you plan to eat from so
\nthey know their boundaries and don\u2019t try to take some of your delicious mansaf
\nwhen you\u2019re not looking.<\/p>\n

3. Use your hand<\/strong><\/h4>\n

And make sure
\nit\u2019s your right hand. (Some people actually eat mansaf with their left hand
\nbehind their backs.) Do not ask for a fork or a spoon until you\u2019ve at least
\ntried number four, below. <\/p>\n

4. Have a ball<\/strong><\/h4>\n

With your right
\nhand, grab some rice and meat, which by then would be drenched in the jameed
\nsauce, and squeeze all the ingredients together until you can form a ball with
\nyour thumb and forefinger. Be patient. It takes time but once you\u2019ve practiced
\nit enough (and after you\u2019ve tasted it, believe me, you\u2019ll want to practice
\noften), you\u2019ll get the hang of it.<\/p>\n

5. Keep it clean<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Don\u2019t go licking
\nyour fingers after every single ball. In fact, after you\u2019ve learned to make a
\nperfect ball, pop it in your mouth without letting your fingers touch your
\nmouth. <\/p>\n

6.\u00a0Stop when you\u2019re full<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Remember \u2013
\neverything is better in moderation. Though you\u2019ll want to continue eating and
\neating this delicious meal, if you don\u2019t stop when you\u2019re full you could suffer
\nfrom sleepiness, bloating, button popping and forgetting names or even where
\nyou live as your friends roll you back home.<\/p>\n

7. Use your head<\/strong><\/h4>\n

If you\u2019re invited as a guest of honor (and you\u2019ll almost always be the guest of honor if you\u2019re invited), chances are they will serve you the platter with the sheep\u2019s head in the middle. Use YOUR head and don\u2019t over-rect. At the very least, try some of it as you host has put you in a very high position of honor by offering you the head. It\u2019s considered very rude to refuse it. If you don\u2019t like your food staring back at you while you\u2019re eating, try to eat the meat around it. <\/p>\n
