Now that we\u2019ve jogged your memory, today we are going to learn about the specific interrogative Arabic question word \u0623\u064e\u064a\u0651 \/ \u02bcayya<\/em> (which), but with a twist, because today we will not only be learning Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) but also be learning Egyptian Arabic, just to introduce you a little to this fun and interesting dialect.<\/p>\n

The Interrogative Question Word \u201cWhat\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n

First, you\u2019ll note that in Modern Standard Arabic, much as they do in English, question words generally come at the beginning of a question; however, in everyday Arabic, these words typically come at the end of the sentence.<\/p>\n

\u0645\u0627\u00a0\/maa<\/em> and\u00a0\u0645\u0627\u0630\u0627\u00a0\/ maTHaa<\/em> are used in different types of questions;\u00a0\u0645\u0627\u0630\u0627\u00a0\/ maTHaa<\/em> is used in questions that don\u2019t have verbs, while \u0645\u0627\u00a0\/ maa<\/em> is used in questions that do have verbs. Furthermore, \u0645\u0627\/ maa<\/em>\u00a0is usually followed by the pronoun that matches its antecedent (the noun being asked about.) The Egyptian Arabic\u00a0\u0627\u064a\u0647 \/ eih<\/em>, however, is fairly simple, and is used in the same way you would use “what” in English. All of these are important to know if you want to learn to speak Arabic, whether you learn Egyptian Arabic or Modern Standard Arabic (MSA). Here are some examples:<\/p>\n

The Interrogative Question Word \u201cWhich\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\u0627\u064a can be used in Modern Standard Arabic with a pronoun suffix to mean “which of”. Conversely, you can put \u0627\u064a before a noun to ask “which (noun)” in Egyptian Arabic. Once again, here are a couple of examples:<\/p>\n

There is also another way to say \u201cwhich\u201d in Egyptian Arabic, but this can be a little tricky to grasp because in this case the \u201cwhich\u201d can come either before or after the noun being referred to as in the formulation:<\/p>\n

“which” \u0627\u0646\u0647\u0648\\\u0627\u0646\u0647\u064a\\\u0627\u0646\u0647\u0645 anhoo\/anhee\/anhum<\/em> (stress falling on the first syllable)
\n+ (indefinite noun)<\/h5>\n
(definite noun) + anhoo\/anhee\/anhum<\/em>
\n(stress falling on the second syllable)<\/h5>\n

Notice that you would usually use
\nthe second option only when the “which” question is on its own \u2013 as
\nin \u201cWhich book? or \u201cWhich girl?” as opposed to “Which book do you
\nlike? Which girl do you know?” where you’d probably use the first option
\nas in:<\/p>\n
