In a previous article, we discussed asking for and understanding questions related to giving directions in Arabic. Unlike cardinal numbers<\/a> which are for counting, ordinal numbers in Arabic are for ordering things in a first-second-third kind of format. They’re pretty useful when giving directions. This is especially in a busy city like Amman, Jordan, where they have numbered circles and you want to tell the taxi driver in Arabic where you want to go. For example, you would tell the driver to “\u062e\u0630 \u0627\u0644\u062b\u0627\u0646\u064a\u0629 \u0645\u0628\u0627\u0634\u0631\u0629 \u0628\u0639\u062f \u0627\u0644\u062f\u0648\u0627\u0631 \u0627\u0644\u062b\u0627\u0645\u0646. \u0625\u0646\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0645\u0628\u0646\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u062b\u0627\u0644\u062b \u0639\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u064a\u0633\u0627\u0631\u201d. “khuTH athaaniyah mubaasharatan ba\u02bbd adduwaar athaamin. \u02bcinahu almabnaa athaalith \u02bcalaa alyasaar\u201d. (\u201cTake the second right after the Eighth Circle. It\u2019s the third building on the left\u201d).<\/p>\n

Ordinal numbers in Arabic are gender-defined. Therefore, you need to be familiar with both the masculine and feminine ordinal forms. <\/p>\n

Examples of feminine and masculine ordinal numbers<\/h2>\n

Note the differences in the use of the masculine and feminine in Arabic. For example, if you want to tell a friend that your house is \u201cthe fifth house,\u201d you say \u0627\u0644\u0628\u064a\u062a \u0627\u0644\u062e\u0627\u0645\u0633 albayt alkhaamis. In this example, we use the masculine ordinal form khaamis because bayt is a masculine noun subject.<\/p>\n

However, in Arabic grammar, because \u201cbus\u201d is feminine, in the sentence \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0643 \u0623\u0646 \u062a\u0623\u062e\u0630 \u0627\u0644\u062d\u0627\u0641\u0644\u0629 \u0627\u0644\u062e\u0627\u0645\u0633\u0629 \u02bbalayka \u02bcan ta\u02bckhuTH alHaafilah alkhaamisah (You have to take the fifth bus.), we use the feminine alkhamisa.<\/p>\n

Of course, ordinal numbers aren\u2019t used only in giving directions, but they are also used in other things like birth order, the number of times you\u2019ve said something, and other things which are talked about in order.<\/p>\n
