There are two kinds of people in this world. Those who like to travel <\/a>or go out often and those whom the Arabs call \u0628\u064a\u062a\u0648\u062a\u064a \/ baytooti<\/em> \u2013 a person who likes to stay at home. Incidentally, in the Arabic language, as in English there is a difference between a \u0645\u0646\u0632\u0644 \/ manzil<\/em> (house) and a \u0628\u064a\u062a \/ bayt<\/em> (home). After all, a manzil<\/em> is just a manzil<\/em>, but a bayt<\/em> is where the \u0642\u0644\u0628 qalb<\/em> (heart) is. Which is why the bayt<\/em> is very much an important part of everyday life for Arabs. With that in mind, let\u2019s learn some Arabic words and phrases<\/em> that will make you feel at home.<\/p>\n

Every house has a \u0633\u0642\u0641 saqf<\/em> (roof) overhead, under which are many \u063a\u0631\u0641 ghuraf<\/em> (rooms). These usually include a \u063a\u0631\u0641\u0629 \u0627\u0644\u0645\u0639\u064a\u0634\u0629 ghurfat almaeisha<\/em> (living room), \u0645\u0637\u0628\u062e matbakh<\/em> (kitchen), a \u063a\u0631\u0641\u0629 \u0646\u0648\u0645 ghurfat nawm<\/em> (bedroom), a \u062d\u0645\u0627\u0645 Hammaam <\/em>(bathroom) and sometimes, a \u063a\u0631\u0641\u0629 \u062c\u0644\u0648\u0633 ghurfat juloos<\/em> (sitting room). Some may even have a \u0643\u0631\u0627\u062c karaaj<\/em>\u00a0(garage) where you can park your \u0633\u064a\u0627\u0631\u0629 siyyaarah<\/em> (car) and a big \u0628\u0633\u062a\u0627\u0646 \u00a0garden<\/em> (bustaan) where your children can play in a \u062d\u0645\u0627\u0645 \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0628\u0627\u062d\u0629 hammaam assibaaha<\/em> (swimming pool).<\/p>\n

You can usually identify every ghurfa<\/em> in the manzil <\/em>by the different items found within it.\u00a0For example, in the bedroom, you can usually expect to find a \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0631\u064a\u0631 assareer<\/em> (bed), a \u0645\u0646\u0636\u062f\u0629 mindhadah<\/em> (nightstand), a couple of \u0645\u0635\u0627\u0628\u064a\u062d masaabeeh<\/em> (lamps), and a \u062e\u0632\u0627\u0646\u0629 khazaanah<\/em> (closet) to hang your \u0645\u0644\u0627\u0628\u0633 malaabis<\/em> (clothes) in.<\/p>\n

As we mentioned before, in nearly all Arabic speaking countries, the \u2018\u2019bayt\u2019\u2019 plays a very major role in the life of the \u0623\u0633\u0631\u0629 \u2018usrah<\/em> (family) which is generally made up of more than just the parents and their children. Indeed, in an Arabic home you will also usually find many members of the extended family hanging out, including grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins. <\/p>\n

In Saudi Arabia, for example, \u0645\u0646\u0627\u0632\u0644 manaazil<\/em> (houses) are built to accommodate up to 10 or 15 family members, and much it does in the rest of the world, the ghurfat almaeisha<\/em> place a central role in the home, both architecturally and literally as it\u2019s usually surrounded by the maTbakh<\/em> and the ghurfat al-juluus<\/em> and \u063a\u0631\u0641\u0629 \u0627\u0644\u0623\u0643\u0644 ghurfat al\u2019akl<\/em> (dining room). Quite often, it\u2019s the largest room in the manzil<\/em> and is available through different ghuraf<\/em>.<\/p>\n
