\nTigris River<\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/h1>\n

Here are some interesting facts about the Tigris.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Tigris has been an important source of irrigation,
\nenergy and travel and tourism, dating back to the earliest known civilizations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Four countries surround the Tigris (Iran, Iraq, Turkey
\nand Syria). It is the second largest river in Western Asia. People use its
\nwater as a source of freshwater and for their agricultural activities. The
\nTigris is also used for hydropower.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

The Tigris borders Mesopotamia in the Fertile
\nCrescent. It\u2019s at the eastern end of two great rivers, the other being the
\nEuphrates. The Tigris River is 1,750 km long. It originates in the Taurus
\nMountains of eastern Turkey, and about 30 km from the source of the Euphrates.
\nThe river then flows for about 400 km along southeastern Turkey before becoming
\npart of the Syrian-Turkish border.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Tigris branches into several channels. First, the
\nman-made Shatt al-Hayy forks to join the Euphrates near Nassiriya. Second, the
\nShatt al-Muminah branch and al-Majar al-Kabir branch. They feed the central
\nmarshes. Third, the Al-Musharrah and Al-Kahla, which feed the Hawizeh Marshes.
\nFurther, the main channel of the river stream is joined by the Al-Kassarah. And
\nlastly, the Tigris river joins the Euphrates river to form the famous
\nShatt-Al-Arab.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tigris river city is Baghdad. Baghdad stands on the
\nbanks of the Tigris river. It was chosen to be the capital of the Abbasid
\nCaliphate, in 762 CE.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

\nEuphrates River<\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/h1>\n

Although Euphrates shares some facts with the Tigris,
\nwe\u2019ll still talk about it in more detail.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The Euphrates is the longest and one of the most
\nimportant rivers in Western Asia. As mentioned before, the Euphrates is one of
\nthe two rivers that define Mesopotamia.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Euphrates originates in Turkey. It flows through
\nSyria and Iraq to finally join the Tigris in the Shatt al-Arab. It also empties
\ninto the Persian Gulf.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

It emerges from the confluence of the Western
\nEuphrates 450 km and the<\/span> <\/span><\/a><\/span>Eastern Euphrates 650 km. Its
\nlength from the source to the confluence with the Tigris is estimated to be
\n3,000 km, of which 1,060 km in Iraq. As a matter of fact, three rivers in Syria
\nadd their water to the Euphrates; the Sajur, the Balikh and the Khabur.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Many civilizations have thrived on the banks of the
\nEuphrates, including during ancient times. One of its most-notable
\ncivilizations was the Mesopotamian Empire. Today that area of the world is
\nknown as Iraq. he Euphrates was part of the \u201cSilk Road,\u201d the famous trade route
\nwhich passed through Central Asia and Mesopotamia. One of the ancient world\u2019s
\nmost important cities, Babylon, was built along the banks of Euphrates.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fishing was and still is important to many people who
\nlive along its banks. More than fifty species of fish live in it. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

During the past century, several large dams have been
\nbuilt along the Euphrates. One of them is the Euphrates Dam. It is more than
\n200 feet high and has a very large reservoir.<\/span><\/p>\n

Throughout history, the Euphrates has been an
\nundeniable vital importance to those living along its course. Now more than
\never, many people depend on the river for basic amenities like electricity and
\ndrinking water. That can be seen through the build of large hydroelectric power
\nplants, irrigation systems and pipes that can transport water over long
\ndistances.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n
