It is the second largest river in Western Asia. People use its<br \/>\nwater as a source of freshwater and for their agricultural activities. The<br \/>\nTigris is also used for hydropower.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-size:\n15.0pt;line-height:115%\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-size:\n15.0pt;line-height:115%\">The Tigris borders Mesopotamia in the Fertile<br \/>\nCrescent. It\u2019s at the eastern end of two great rivers, the other being the<br \/>\nEuphrates. The Tigris River is 1,750 km long. It originates in the Taurus<br \/>\nMountains of eastern Turkey, and about 30 km from the source of the Euphrates.<br \/>\nThe river then flows for about 400 km along southeastern Turkey before becoming<br \/>\npart of the Syrian-Turkish border.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-size:\n15.0pt;line-height:115%\">The Tigris branches into several channels. First, the<br \/>\nman-made Shatt al-Hayy forks to join the Euphrates near Nassiriya. Second, the<br \/>\nShatt al-Muminah branch and al-Majar al-Kabir branch. They feed the central<br \/>\nmarshes. Third, the Al-Musharrah and Al-Kahla, which feed the Hawizeh Marshes.<br \/>\nFurther, the main channel of the river stream is joined by the Al-Kassarah.
