\nword \u201czamzam\u201d? For example, maybe you know someone who\u2019s going to Mecca and you
\nheard somebody ask them to bring back \u201czamzam\u201d. Afterwards, you might have wondered
\nto yourself about what exactly this \u201czamzam\u201d is that everybody\u2019s asking for. After all, it
\nis one of the most often asked for souvenirs of Muslims visiting Mecca for Hajj
\nor Umrah.<\/span> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Well, today it also happens to be
\nthe subject of today\u2019s post. So, without further ado, let\u2019s get started so you won\u2019t
\nhave to wonder what zamzam is anymore.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Holy
\nWater?<\/o:p><\/span><\/h1>\n

Chances are, if you\u2019ve ever read
\nthe Bible or the Holy Quran, you might already know what zamzam water is. (You
\njust didn\u2019t know its name.)  <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Zamzam water in the Bible<\/span> is mentioned in Genesis 21:17-20<\/span>:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

“God
\nheard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said
\nto her, “What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid; God has heard the
\nboy crying as he lies there. Lift the boy up and take him by the hand, for I
\nwill make him into a great nation.” Then God opened her eyes and she saw a
\nwell of water. So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a
\ndrink.”<\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Likewise, Islam\u2019s holy book mentions zamzam water in Quran<\/span> 2:158 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

“Verily!
\nAs-Saf\u00e2 and Al-Marwah (two mountains in Makkah) are of the Symbols of All\u00e2h. So
\nit is not a sin on him who perform Hajj or ‘Umrah (pilgrimage) of the House
\n(the Ka’bah at Makkah) to perform the going (Taw\u00e2f) between them (As-Saf\u00e2 and
\nAl-Marwah). And whoever does good voluntarily, then verily, All\u00e2h is
\nAll-Recogniser, All-Knower.”<\/o:p><\/i><\/p>\n

Still, even if you\u2019ve never read
\nabout the zamzam well in
\nthe Bible<\/span> or the Quran, Zamzam\u2019s history is interesting.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The Zamzam
\nWater Story<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/h1>\n

The origins of zamzam lie in the
\nstory of the prophet Abraham. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Abraham and his wife, Sarah, were
\nchildless. As a result, Sarah told Abraham to lie with her maidservant, Hagar,
\nso that he would have an heir. Abraham did as his wife suggested, and indeed,
\nHagar bore him a son whom Hagar called Ishmael. However, soon after, Sarah came
\nto regret her decision and became jealous of Hagar. God then told Abraham to
\ntake Hagar and her son far away from Sarah\u2019s jealous eyes.  <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Though he was very sad about
\nthis, Abraham did as God asked. He took Hagar from Canaan (today\u2019s
\nLebanon, Syria, Jordan, Israel and Palestine) to the far off barren land of
\nMecca.  Giving her some dates and water,
\nAbraham turned his back to her and started heading home. As he walked away,
\nHagar called out, \u201cHas God told you to do this?\u201d <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Abraham shook his head, \u201cYes\u201d. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Hagar replied, \u201cThen God will not
\ncause us to be lost.<\/span>\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Inevitably, the two ran out of
\ndates and water in that dry and desolate land. As a result, the child became
\nvery thirsty and started crying. Desperate, Hagar ran between the hills of
\nSafa and Marwa in search of water for her son. On her seventh trip between
\nthe two hills, an angel appeared before her. \u201cGod has heard Ismael\u2019s
\ncries,\u201d he said and immediately, a spring burst forth from the ground beneath
\nIsmael\u2019s heel. Hagar carefully collected some water for herself and her son. The
\nwell was subsequently named \u201cZamzam\u201d from the phrase \u201cZom\u00eb Zom\u00eb\u201d<\/i>, meaning “stop flowing”. This is believed to
\nbe a phrase Hagar repeated during her attempt to contain the spring water. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Is Zamzam Water
\nInfinite<\/span>?<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/h1>\n

Today, some four millennial
\nlater, zamzam still quenches the thirst of countless numbers of people from across
\nthe globe. Located just 20 meters from the Kabba, the well pumps three to five
\ngallons (11- 19 liters) of water a second. Of course, this leads one to wonder
\nwhether or not the well will ever run out of water. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Well, Muslims believe the well
\nwill never run dry because it\u2019s a miraculously generated source of water from Allah<\/span>.
\nWhile this may be true, it\u2019s also true that Zamzam\u2019s water is renewable
\nwater.  It\u2019s primary source comes from
\nMeccan rainfall that amounts to an average of 4.4 inch (111 mm) a year. Experts
\nclaim the Zamzam well hasn\u2019t replenished itself in years, so the fact that it\u2019s
\nstill flowing is truly miraculous.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Zamzam Water Benefits<\/span>
\n<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/h1>\n

As mentioned before, Muslims
\nbelieve zamzam is holy water. In fact, in Saheeh al-Jaami, 3302, the Prophet
\n(PBUH) said, \u201cThe best water on the face of the earth is the water of Zamzam.
\nIt is a kind of food and a healing from sickness.\u201d  <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Arabic words that describe Arabic
\nare murwiya<\/i> (\u201cquenched\u201d) and shabbaa<\/i> (\u201csatisfying\u201d)<\/span>. Along
\nwith a source of nourishment, Muslims also believe it to be a cure for all
\nillnesses. It
\nis also believed that if a person makes a wish after drinking Zamzam water, his
\nwish will come true<\/span>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

And, as if that\u2019s not enough, here are five other
\ninteresting facts about Zamzam:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

1.        <\/span><\/span>The Zamzam well is 30 meters deep. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

2.       <\/span><\/span>Zamzam water has no color or smell but a distinct taste.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

3.        <\/span><\/span>Its high calcium and magnesium salt content are believed to give
\nZamzam healing properties.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

4.       <\/span><\/span>Zamzam helps stave off hunger pangs.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

5.       <\/span><\/span>Zamzam may help reduce stomach acidity.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Zamzam Water as a Souvenir<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/h1>\n

Today, the Zamzam well is located
\ninside of the Masjid al-Haram only 20 meters from the Al-Kaaba, Islam\u2019s holiest
\nsite. Indeed, millions of pilgrims from around the world travel to Makkah for
\nHajj. As
\na result, many are requested to bring some Zamzam back home with them<\/span>.
\nAnd since the Zamzam water
\nprice<\/span> is SR5 ($1.33 USD) for 10 liters (2.6 gallons), many think that\u2019s
\na pretty good deal for a souvenir. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n
