Most of you probably don\u2019t think about trees when you think of the
\nMiddle East. More than likely, any thoughts of that region likely conjure up
\nimages of miles-long barren deserts for some of you. However, you may be
\nsurprised that certain parts of the Arab world do, in fact, have forests of
\ntrees.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sure, some reading this are familiar with some of the more
\nwell-known Arabic trees of the region. For example, there are the famous cedars
\nof Lebanon and the pistachio forests of Afghanistan. And you don\u2019t have to know
\nthe names of plants in Arabic to be familiar with some of these trees. For
\nexample, the sap from the gum Arabic tree Senegalia Senegal is used in
\neverything from M&M\u2019s to gummy bears.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Today, however, we\u2019re not going to be focusing on certain types of
\ntrees in the Middle East. Instead, we\u2019ll be looking at three rather unique ones
\n\u2013 the thickest, the tallest and the oldest trees of the Middle East.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The Thickest Tree in the Middle East<\/o:p><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

In the small village of Shur Kesh, Iran, is a rather large tree
\nknown as Quercus castaneifolia, <\/i>in Arabic known as <\/i>\u0633\u0646\u062f\u064a\u0627\u0646 \u0643\u0633\u062a\u0646\u0627\u0626\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0623\u0648\u0631\u0627\u0642<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> \/sinyaan kastanaa\u2019ee
\nal\u2019awraaq\/. The Chestnut-Leaved Oak Tree (its everyday name) was measured in
\n2022 with a girth of 15.45 meters (50 ft.). This makes this mighty oak the
\nthickest tree in the Middle East. However, it\u2019s not the thickest tree in the
\nworld. That title goes to a cypress tree (Taxodium mucronatum)<\/i>, which
\nmeasures 36.2 meters (119 ft.) around. It is located in the Mexican village of
\nSanta Maria del Tule, Mexico.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The Tallest Tree in the Middle East<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

In 2020, researchers measured an Oriental Beech (Fagus
\norientalis<\/i>) in Arabic known as \u0632\u0627\u0646 \u0634\u0631\u0642\u064a<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/span>\/zaan sharqee\/, found on the Ayder plateau in the
\nCamlihemsin district of Turkey. The Oriental Beech is native to Eastern Europe
\nand Western Asia and is well-known for its wide, shade-providing canopy. If
\nthat is the case, a lot of people must fit under the shade of this particular
\nTurkish tree. That\u2019s because researchers found it to be the tallest tree in the
\nMiddle East at 33 meters (108 ft.) tall. That\u2019s only two meters (10 ft.) shy of
\nthe tallest tree in the world \u2013 the giant Redwood, \u0627\u0644\u062e\u0634\u0628
\n\u0627\u0644\u0623\u062d\u0645\u0631 \u0627\u0644\u0639\u0645\u0644\u0627\u0642<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> \/alkhashab al\u2019aHmar al\u02bbimlaaq\/, known as Hyperion. Located in
\nCalifornia, it is a towering 35 meters (116 ft.) high.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The Oldest Tree in the Middle East<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Also in California is Methuselah, an ancient bristlecone pine
\nthought to be around 4,588 years old. However, half a world away in Iran is the
\nworld\u2019s second oldest tree – the Sarv-e Abarqu, in Arabic known as, <\/span>\u0633\u0631\u0648 \u0623\u0628\u0631 \u0643\u0648\u0647<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> \/siroo \u2018abar kooh\/<\/span>. Still, at
\nsomewhere around 4,000 years old, this Cupressus sempervirens<\/i> (Mediterranean
\nCypress), <\/span>\u0633\u0631\u0648 \u0627\u0644\u0628\u062d\u0631
\n\u0627\u0644\u0623\u0628\u064a\u0636 \u0627\u0644\u0645\u062a\u0648\u0633\u0637<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>,
\n\/siroo albaHar al\u2019abyadh almutawassiT\/<\/span> is the oldest tree in the Middle East. What\u2019s more, some believe
\nit to be the oldest living thing in all of Asia. Not bad for a sapling that was
\naround when Stonehenge was completed and the Latins first set foot in
\nItaly. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

These are just some of the unique trees you\u2019ll find in the Middle
