You\u2019ve likely heard the expression \u201cTwo\u2019s company, three\u2019s a crowd\u201d, and Arabic grammar kind of agrees with that expression. You see, according to their numbers, Arabic nouns are divided into three categories: singular, dual, and plural.<\/span><\/p>\n


<\/b><\/p>\n

The singular (or <\/span>\u0627\u0644\u0645\u064f\u0641\u0631\u064e\u062f<\/span>\/<\/span>almufrad<\/span> in Arabic) is used to talk about one of something, and the plural (<\/span>\u062c\u064e\u0645\u0650\u0639<\/span>\/<\/span>jami<\/span>\u02bb\/<\/span>) is used when there are three or more of something. <\/span><\/p>\n


<\/b><\/p>\n

However, Arabic is one of just a few languages today that uses the dual (<\/span>\u0627\u0644\u0645\u064f\u062b\u064e\u0646\u0651\u064e\u0649<\/span>\/<\/span>almuthannaa\/<\/span>) \u2013 the grammatical number used in addition to singular and plural which indicates two of something. <\/span><\/p>\n

A Couple of Things about a Couple of Things<\/span><\/h1>\n


<\/b><\/p>\n

When you want to talk about two of something in Arabic, instead of using the plural as you do in most other languages, Arabic has something called the dual to identify two nouns.<\/span><\/p>\n


<\/b><\/p>\n

When the noun is nominative (i.e., the subject), the dual is formed by adding the suffix <\/span>\u0646<\/span> <\/span>\u0623<\/span> to the noun. For example:<\/span><\/p>\n

If Two Shall Agree<\/span><\/h1>\n

Both demonstrative pronouns and adjectives must also agree with their corresponding nouns in gender and number. For example, in the sentence<\/span> \u0647\u064e\u0630\u0627\u0646 \u0643\u0650\u062a\u0627\u0628\u0627\u0646 \u0643\u064e\u0628\u064a\u0631\u0627\u0646<\/span> \/ <\/span>haTHaan kitaabaan kabeerann <\/span>\/ \u201cThese are two big books\u201d, notice that the noun, adjective, and demonstrative pronoun all end with the same dual masculine suffix. <\/span><\/p>\n

Also remember from our recent post on demonstrative pronouns that the feminine for there is <\/span>\u0647\u0627\u062a\u0627\u0646<\/span> \/<\/span>haataani\/<\/span>, so:<\/span><\/p>\n

A Couple More Things<\/span><\/h2>\n


<\/b><\/p>\n

When the noun is accusative (the direct object of the verb) or genitive (words that come after a preposition, an adverb) then the Arabic letter suffix must be attached to the end of the noun as in <\/span>\u0643\u0650\u062a\u0627\u0628\u064e\u064a\u0652\u0646<\/span>\/<\/span>kitaabayn <\/span>(two books).<\/span><\/p>\n


<\/b><\/p>\n

The masculine pronoun for \u201cboth\u201d in Arabic is <\/span>\u0643\u0650\u0644\u0627<\/span> \/<\/span>kilaa\/<\/span> as in <\/span>\u0643\u0650\u0644\u0627 \u0627\u0644\u0631\u0651\u064e\u062c\u064f\u0644\u064e\u064a\u0646<\/span> \/ <\/span>kilaa irrajulayn \/<\/span> (two men). For the feminine form, we use <\/span>\u0643\u0650\u0644\u062a\u0627<\/span> \/<\/span>kiltaa\/ <\/span>as that used in \u0643\u0650\u0644\u062a\u0627 \u0627\u0644\u0635\u0651\u064e\u062f\u064a\u0642\u064e\u062a\u064a\u0646  \/<\/span>kiltaa iSSadeeqatayn\/<\/span> or \u201ctwo friends\u201d who are female. <\/span><\/p>\n
