Hello and welcome back to Kaleela. Today we\u2019re continuing our discussion about Arabic grammar by looking at Arabic plural nouns.<\/span><\/p>\n


<\/span><\/p>\n

You may remember that we\u2019ve already talked about singular nouns when there is only one of something, and we\u2019ve also explored the use of duals when there are two of something. However, for those of you just joining us, here is quick a reminder. <\/span><\/p>\n

Using the root letters \u0637\u060c \u0644\u060c \u0628 on the active pattern (faa<\/span>\u02bbil<\/span>\/\u0641\u0627\u0639\u0650\u0644), one student would be \u0637\u0627\u0644\u0650\u0628\/<\/span>Taalib<\/span>\/ and the dual for two students would be \u0637\u0627\u0644\u0650\u0628\u0627\u0646\u0650 \/<\/span>Taalibaani<\/span>\/.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Now plurality, on the other hand, is where Arabic grammar becomes a lot more interesting.<\/span><\/p>\n

Arabic Plurals<\/span><\/h1>\n

In Arabic, there are two types of plurals: sound or broken.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sound plurals ( \u062c\u064e\u0645\u0639 \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0651\u0627\u0644\u0650\u0645 \/<\/span>jam<\/span>\u02bb<\/span> issaalim<\/span>\/) are created simply by adding a suffix to the singular form. For the masculine form the suffixes \u0640\u0648\u0652\u0646\u064e or \u0640\u064a\u0652\u0646\u064e are added. For the feminine form, the suffix \u0640\u0627\u062a\u064c is used.<\/span><\/p>\n


<\/span><\/p>\n

Broken plurals  \u062c\u0645\u0652\u0639 \u0627\u0644\u062a\u0651\u064e\u0643\u0652\u0633\u064a\u0631 \/<\/span>jam<\/span>\u02bb<\/span> ittakseer<\/span>\/ on the other hand change the internal structure of the singular (and that\u2019s why they call it \u201cbroken\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\n


<\/span><\/p>\n

Another distinction between sound plurals and broken plurals is that there is only one form for the sound plural for each of the two genders; however, there are many broken plurals in the language.<\/span><\/p>\n


<\/span><\/p>\n

In this post, we will discuss how to form the sound plurals, give some details about broken plurals and discuss when to use which. Still, it is important to note that because there are so many ways to create a broken plural, we will not go too far into details as it would take another post or two just to describe the many ways to do so. You will, however, be able to learn all about them during future grammar lessons on the Kaleela Arabic language learning app.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sound Plurals<\/span><\/p>\n

Sound plurals are relatively easy to form as both the masculine and feminine versions have only one basic form each which involves simply adding a suffix to the noun. The only thing really noteworthy is to remember that the form for the masculine plural is changed slightly depending on the grammatical case of the noun.<\/span><\/p>\n

As mentioned before, Masculine sound plural nouns end in \u0640\u0648\u0652\u0646\u064e or \u0640\u064a\u0652\u0646\u064e and feminine sound plural nouns end in \u0640\u0627\u062a\u064c. Here are some examples:<\/span><\/p>\n

As we mentioned before, there are many, many ways to form broken plurals. With that in mind, it\u2019s easier for you if you memorize the broken plural for each new noun that you learn. <\/span><\/p>\n
