Those of you who have been following us lately know that we are well down the path of our Arabic grammar journey. Today we\u2019ll continue our walk along that path as we look at a part of Arabic grammar that is uniquely Arabic \u2013 <\/span>\u0625\u0650\u0636\u0627\u0641\u064e\u0629<\/span>\/\u02bc<\/span>idhaafah<\/span>\/, otherwise known as the \u201cpossessive clause\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n


<\/b><\/p>\n

What is an \u02bcidhaafah?<\/span><\/h1>\n


<\/b><\/p>\n

\u0625\u0650\u0636\u0627\u0641\u064e\u0629\/<\/span>\u2019idhaafah<\/span>\/ is an Arabic grammar structure made up of two nouns. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

For example, \u201cLaith\u2019s car\u201d would be <\/span>\u0633\u064e\u064a\u0651\u0627\u0631\u064e\u0629\u064f<\/span> \/<\/span>sayyaaratu<\/span>\/ + <\/span>\u0644\u064e\u064a\u0652\u062b<\/span> \/<\/span>layth<\/span>\/<\/span> <\/span>or <\/span>\u0633\u064e\u064a\u0651\u0627\u0631\u064e\u0629\u064f \u0644\u064e\u064a\u0652\u062b<\/span>\/<\/span>sayyaaratu layth<\/span>\/ (\u201ccar of Laith\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\n


<\/b><\/p>\n

Notice in Arabic that what is being possessed \u2013 the car in this case \u2013 comes before the possessor. This is because the first word of the clause is <\/span>\u0645\u064f\u0636\u0627\u0641<\/span> \/<\/span>mudhaaf<\/span>\/ or \u201cthe word that is added\u201d and the second word is called the <\/span>\u0645\u064f\u0636\u0627\u0641 \u0625\u0650\u0644\u064e\u064a\u0647<\/span> \/<\/span>mudhaaf <\/span>\u02bc<\/span>ilayh<\/span>\/ or \u201cwhat was added to.<\/span><\/p>\n


<\/b><\/p>\n

How to Create an <\/span>\u02bc<\/span>idhaafah <\/span>(Part 1)<\/span><\/h1>\n

<\/p>\n

There are two key rules when creating possessive clauses:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. \n

    If the <\/span>mudhaaf<\/span> has a <\/span>tanwin<\/span> (or a <\/span>\u064b <\/span> that substitutes for it), that <\/span>tanwin<\/span> or <\/span>\u064b <\/span> will drop off<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  2. \n

    Next, the \u0645\u064f\u0636\u0627\u0641 \u0625\u0650\u0644\u064e\u064a\u0647\/<\/span>mudhaaf <\/span>\u02bc<\/span>ilayh<\/span>\/ will be in the state of \u062c\u064e\u0631\u0651 \/<\/span>jarr<\/span>\/, meaning that it will have \u0643\u064e\u0633\u0631\u064e\u0629\/<\/span>kasrah<\/span>\/ or one of its substitutes at the end.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  3. \n

    It\u2019s not a hard rule, but the \u0645\u064f\u0636\u0627\u0641\/<\/span>mudhaaf<\/span>\/  never has the <\/span>\u0627\u0644<\/span> at its beginning.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    <\/p>\n

    In the example <\/span>\u0633\u064e\u064a\u0651\u0627\u0631\u064e\u0629\u064f \u0644\u064e\u064a\u0652\u062b<\/span>\/<\/span>sayyaaratu layth<\/span> (Laith\u2019s car), the word <\/span>\u0644\u064e\u064a\u0652\u062b<\/span> \/<\/span>layth<\/span>\/ is the \u0645\u064f\u0636\u0627\u0641 \u0625\u0650\u0644\u064e\u064a\u0647\/<\/span>mudhaaf <\/span>\u02bc<\/span>ilayh<\/span>\/ and has <\/span>\u0643\u064e\u0633\u0631\u064e\u0629<\/span>\/<\/span>kasrah<\/span>\/ added to it it.  The word <\/span>\u0633\u064e\u064a\u0651\u0627\u0631\u064e\u0629\u064f<\/span> \/<\/span>sayyaaratu\/<\/span> is the \u0645\u064f\u0636\u0627\u0641\/<\/span>mudhaaf<\/span>\/ and has lost its <\/span>tanwin.<\/span>  The words together mean \u201cLaith\u2019s car\u201d.  In the end, it simply comes down to this easy-to-remember formula:  <\/span><\/p>\n

    mudhaaf<\/span> + <\/span>mudhaaf <\/span>\u02bc<\/span>ilayh<\/span> = \u201c<\/span>mudhaaf <\/span>\u02bc<\/span>ilayh\u2019s<\/span> <\/span>mudhaaf<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/h2>\n

    How to Create an <\/span>\u02bc<\/span>idhaafah <\/span>(Part 2)<\/span><\/h1>\n


    <\/b><\/p>\n

    Another thing to remember when constructing an \u02bc<\/span>idhaafah<\/span> is that this construction includes both an indefinite and a definite noun. However, there is a condition that must be met: the first noun (<\/span>mudhaaf<\/span>) is indefinite, and the second (<\/span>mudhaaf <\/span>\u02bc<\/span>ilayh<\/span>) is a definite noun. For example, <\/span>\u0645\u064e\u0643\u062a\u064e\u0628\u064f \u0627\u0644\u0631\u0651\u064e\u062c\u064f\u0644\u0650<\/span> \/<\/span>maktabu irrajuli<\/span>\/ means \u201cthe office of the man\u201d.  <\/span><\/p>\n

    <\/p>\n

    Note that, even though it\u2019s indefinite, the word <\/span>\u0645\u064e\u0643\u062a\u064e\u0628\u064f<\/span>\/<\/span>maktabu<\/span>\/ was translated to \u201cthe office\u201d. The reason for this is that the second noun (<\/span>\u0627\u0644\u0631\u0651\u064e\u062c\u064f\u0644\u0650<\/span>\/<\/span>irrajuli<\/span>\/) is already a definite noun with the definite article <\/span>\u0627\u0644<\/span> \/al\/. As a result, it has taken possession of the first noun, turning it into a definite noun. Since \u0625\u0650\u0636\u0627\u0641\u064e\u0629\/\u02bc<\/span>idhaafah<\/span>\/ is like an addition of one thing to another, one noun is <\/span>of<\/span> another noun; hence \u201cthe office<\/span> of<\/span> the man.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

    <\/p>\n

    Other Ways <\/span>\u02bcidhaafah<\/span> is Used<\/span><\/h1>\n


    <\/b><\/p>\n

    \u02bc<\/span>idhaafah<\/span> also happens when both nouns are indefinite, as seen in the following example:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \u0645\u064e\u0643\u062a\u064e\u0628\u064f \u0631\u064e\u062c\u064f\u0644\u064d<\/span> <\/span><\/h5>\n
    \/<\/span>maktabu rajulin<\/span>\/ <\/span><\/h5>\n
    a man\u2019s office<\/span><\/h5>\n


    <\/b><\/p>\n

    Furthermore, \u0625\u0650\u0636\u0627\u0641\u064e\u0629\/\u02bc<\/span>idhaafah<\/span>\/ is also used when a possessive pronoun is placed as a suffix on a noun. <\/span><\/p>\n

    You can see the examples of this in the word <\/span>\u0645\u064e\u0643\u062a\u064e\u0628\u064f\u0647\u064f<\/span> \/<\/span>maktabuhu<\/span>\/ meaning his office and <\/span>\u0645\u064e\u0643\u062a\u064e\u0628\u064f\u0647\u0627<\/span> \/<\/span>maktabuhaa<\/span>\/ meaning her office. <\/span><\/p>\n

    <\/p>\n

    What\u2019s more, you can also place a demonstrative pronoun between the first and second noun in \u0625\u0650\u0636\u0627\u0641\u064e\u0629\/\u02bc<\/span>idhaafah<\/span>\/ clauses as in the following example:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \u0645\u064e\u0643\u062a\u064e\u0628\u064f \u0647\u064e\u0630\u0627 \u0627\u0644\u0631\u0651\u064e\u062c\u064f\u0644\u0650<\/span><\/h5>\n

    this man\u2019s office<\/span><\/h5>\n


    <\/span>The construction doesn\u2019t stop there, however. It also applies to a more complex situation called \u201ccomplex \u0625\u0650\u0636\u0627\u0641\u064e\u0629\/\u02bc<\/span>idhaafah<\/span>\/\u201d. Still, the first two nouns are indefinite, while the last one is the only one allowed to be definite. This can be seen in the following example:<\/span><\/p>\n

    <\/span>Now that you are familiar with the \u0625\u0650\u0636\u0627\u0641\u064e\u0629\/<\/span>\u2019idhaafah<\/span>\/<\/span> <\/span>construction, it\u2019s easy to see who owns what. As a result, let\u2019s turn one \u0625\u0650\u0636\u0627\u0641\u064e\u0629\/<\/span>\u2019idhaafah<\/span>\/ clause into some definite versions as per the following examples:<\/span><\/p>\n
