Hello and welcome to Kaleela. Over the past few weeks we\u2019ve been delving into Arabic grammar. Today we will continue as we talk about prepositions \u2013 those parts of Arabic speech that are usually placed in front of a noun or noun phrase and show the direction, time, place, location, or spatial relationship to that noun or noun phrase. <\/span><\/p>\n

Like English and most other languages, prepositions are used in everyday Arabic conversations and have the important function of connecting other parts of a sentence.  Also like English, there are no real rules behind which prepositions to use. Indeed, they are often idiomatic, and most of the time, they have to be learned on a case-by-case basis. <\/span><\/p>\n

Ah, but we\u2019re getting ahead of ourselves already so why don\u2019t we start off on the right foot with the basics of prepositions for now?<\/span><\/p>\n

Getting Down to the Basics<\/span><\/h1>\n


<\/b><\/p>\n

In Arabic, prepositions are known as \u062d\u064f\u0631\u0648\u0641 \u0627\u0644\u062c\u064e\u0631\u0651 \/<\/span>huroof iljarr<\/span>\/ and are a single letter or word that connects either two nouns or a verb and a noun together to make a sentence. Like English, they are also put in front of the noun or noun phrase which is known as the object of the preposition.<\/span> <\/span>What\u2019s more, they are what they call in Arabic \u0643\u064e\u0644\u0650\u0645\u0627\u062a \u0645\u064e\u0628\u0646\u0650\u064a\u0651\u064e\u0629<\/span> <\/span>or \u201cbuilt words\u201d that have a fixed pronunciation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Though there a many prepositions in Arabic, today we will discuss prepositions that you\u2019re most likely to hear in everyday Arabic conversations. <\/span><\/p>\n
