When you first start learning Arabic, one of the most crucial steps in learning and understanding the language is knowing how to ask even the simplest of questions. <\/span><\/p>\n

Today\u2019s post is a lesson in learning how to do just that. And to make it as easy as possible, we\u2019re going to divide the lesson into two categories: Yes and No Questions and Wh- Questions.<\/span><\/p>\n


<\/b><\/p>\n

Yes and No Questions<\/span><\/h1>\n

Much the same as it is in English, a Yes or No question in Arabic is a question that requires only an answer of \u201cyes\u201d or \u201cno\u201d (or  \u201c<\/span>\u0646\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0645<\/span>\/<\/span>na<\/span>\u02bb<\/span>am<\/span>\/\u201d or \u201c<\/span>\u0644\u0627<\/span>\/<\/span>laa<\/span>\/no\u201d in the Arabic\u2019s case).<\/span><\/p>\n

To create a Yes or No question, start with the interrogative particle <\/span>\u0647\u064e\u0644<\/span> \/<\/span>hal<\/span>\/. However <\/span>\u0647\u064e\u0644<\/span> \/<\/span>hal<\/span>\/ can also be substituted by <\/span>\u0623<\/span> (\u02bc<\/span>alif<\/span> with a <\/span>hamza<\/span> on top)which serves the same purpose. <\/span><\/p>\n

Either way, asking a question is quite simple in Arabic. All you have to do is add <\/span>\u0647\u064e\u0644<\/span> \/<\/span>hal<\/span>\/ or <\/span>\u0623<\/span> (\u02bc<\/span>alif <\/span>with a <\/span>hamza<\/span> on top) to the beginning of a sentence with the formula <\/span>verb<\/span> <\/span>+<\/span> <\/span>subject<\/span> <\/span>+<\/span> <\/span>object<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

As you can see above, <\/span>\u0647\u064e\u0644<\/span> \/<\/span>hal<\/span>\/ is used for nearly all Yes or No questions, even those that start with the English \u201cbe\u201d verbs such as \u201cis\u201d and \u201care\u201d. Also, again, the answer here would be a simple <\/span>\u0646\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0645<\/span>\/<\/span>na<\/span>\u02bb<\/span>am<\/span>\/yes or <\/span>\u0644\u0627<\/span>\/<\/span>laa<\/span>\/no. <\/span><\/p>\n

Wh- Questions<\/span><\/h1>\n


<\/b><\/p>\n

Much like the Wh- questions in English, Arabic uses interrogative nouns in questions to which an answer provides information for what was asked. <\/span><\/p>\n

These are:<\/span><\/p>\n

Who: <\/span>\u0645\u064e\u0646\u0652 <\/span>\/man\/<\/span><\/p>\n

What: <\/span>\u0645\u0627\u0630\u0627<\/span> or <\/span>\u0645\u0627<\/span> \/maa\/ or \/maaTHaa\/<\/span><\/p>\n

Where: <\/span>\u0623\u064e\u064a\u0646<\/span> \/<\/span>\u02bc<\/span>ayn\/<\/span><\/p>\n

When: <\/span>\u0645\u064e\u062a\u0649<\/span> \/mata\/<\/span><\/p>\n

How: <\/span>\u0643\u064e\u064a\u0641<\/span> \/kayf\/<\/span><\/p>\n

In Arabic, the formula is <\/span>Wh-<\/span> <\/span>+<\/span> <\/span>verb<\/span> <\/span>+<\/span> <\/span>object<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n
