In Part 3 of last week\u2019s lesson on directions, we learned about the definite article in Arabic; however, we thought we needed to explain a little more about another aspect of the definite article that warranted a lesson all its own. It\u2019s called \u0647\u064e\u0645\u0632\u064e\u0629\u064f \u0627\u0644\u0648\u064e\u0635\u0644\/<\/span>hamzatu ilwaSl<\/span>, otherwise known in English as \u201cthe link\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/b><\/p>\n

hamzatu ilwaSl <\/span><\/h1>\n


<\/span>In our lesson on definite articles, you might remember that <\/span>\u0623\u062f\u0648\u0627\u062a \u0627\u0644\u062a\u0651\u0639\u0631\u064a\u0641<\/span>\/\u2019adawaat atta\u02bbreef\/, Arabic for definite articles.<\/span><\/p>\n


<\/b><\/p>\n

Well, you see, there is no word in Standard Arabic that starts with a sukoon( <\/span>\u0640\u0652<\/span> ) \u2013 the symbol that represents an absence of the vowel on a letter \u2013 because you wouldn\u2019t be able to pronounce it. As a result, an Arabic word must start with any of the three short vowels: <\/span>fatHah<\/span> ( <\/span>\u0640\u064e<\/span> ), <\/span>dhammah<\/span> ( <\/span>\u0640\u064f<\/span> ) or <\/span>kasrah<\/span> ( <\/span>\u0640\u0650<\/span> ). Thus, we add an extra \/\u02bc<\/span>alif<\/span>\/  (<\/span>\u0627<\/span>) with the vowel <\/span>fatHah <\/span>( <\/span>\u0640\u064e<\/span> ) on top of \/\u02bcalif\/  (<\/span>\u0627<\/span>) before the letter \/laam\/ ( <\/span>\u0644<\/span> ). <\/span><\/p>\n


<\/b><\/p>\n

Now, if you remember learning about the Arabic vowels, you know that any<\/span> <\/span>\/<\/span>\u02bcalif<\/span>\/ ( <\/span>\u0627<\/span> ) in combination with long or short vowels is called \/<\/span>hamzah<\/span>\/, and the particular hamza used in the definite article to pronounce the word correctly is called a <\/span>\u0647\u064e\u0645\u0632\u064e\u0629\u064f<\/span> <\/span>\u0648\u064e\u0635\u0644<\/span> \/<\/span>hamzatu waSl<\/span>\/. The \/<\/span>waSl<\/span>\/ comes from the symbol that represents the letter <\/span>\u0635<\/span>  \u2013 a letter used to abbreviate the word  <\/span>\u0648\u064e\u0635\u0644<\/span>  that, in fact, means \/<\/span>waSl<\/span>\/ (or, in English, \u201cto join\u201d). Here is an example:<\/span><\/p>\n

Rules of hamzatu ilwaSl<\/span><\/h1>\n

  1. \n

    hamzatu ilwaSl<\/span> only comes at the beginning of a word.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  2. \n

    hamzatu ilwaSl<\/span> is not pronounced if a word with <\/span>hamzat waSl<\/span> has a preceding word. That is, if the first word of a sentence has a <\/span>hamzat waSl<\/span>, then you\u2019ll pronounce the <\/span>hamzat waSl<\/span>; however, if the <\/span>hamzatu ilwaSl<\/span> word is not the first word, then you drop its pronunciation. See the following examples.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    \u0627\u0644\u0652\u0642\u064e\u0644\u064e\u0645\u064f \u062a\u064e\u062d\u0652\u062a\u064e \u0627\u0644\u0643\u064f\u0631\u0652\u0633\u0650\u064a\u0651.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n


    <\/b><\/p>\n

    Notice in the first example that the word \u0627\u0644\u0643\u064f\u0631\u0652\u0633\u0650\u064a\u0651 \/alkursey\/ has no word that comes before it so the <\/span>hamzat waSl<\/span> is pronounced. In the second example, however, \u0627\u0644\u0643\u064f\u0631\u0652\u0633\u0650\u064a\u0651 \/alkursey\/ has the preposition <\/span>\u062a\u064e\u062d\u0652\u062a\u064e<\/span> \/<\/span>taHta<\/span>\/ (\u201cunder\u201d) before it so the <\/span>hamzat ilwaSl<\/span> is not pronounced.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Hamzatu ilwaSl has other uses as well where it is a part of some nouns like <\/span>\u0627\u0645\u0631\u064e\u0623\u064e\u0629<\/span> \/<\/span>imra\u02bcah<\/span>\/ (\u201cwoman\u201d). <\/span><\/p>\n


    <\/b><\/p>\n

    What\u2019s more, you can also find it at the beginning of certain verbs. However, in this lesson, we just stuck to its use in the definite article.<\/span><\/p>\n
