Hello and welcome to our blog where today we\u2019ll touch on what is perhaps one of the most misunderstood symbols in Arabic \u2013 the <\/span>sukoon<\/span>\/ <\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0643\u0648\u0646<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>sukoon<\/span>\/<\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0643\u0648\u0646<\/span> is the symbol \u00b0 which, as you can see, sort of looks like the symbol for \u201cdegrees\u201d in English. In Arabic, the <\/span>sukoon<\/span>\/<\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0643\u0648\u0646<\/span> represents an absence of the vowel on a letter.   <\/span><\/p>\n

Also known <\/span>jazm<\/span>\/<\/span>(\u062c\u064e\u0632\u0645)<\/span>, sukoon\/<\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0643\u0648\u0646<\/span> is a short letter case, and since letters with vowels cannot be read by themselves, they are read with vowel letters. The <\/span>sukoon<\/span>\/<\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0643\u0648\u0646<\/span> means that the letter has no <\/span>Harakaat<\/span>\/<\/span>\u062d\u064e\u0631\u064e\u06a9\u064e\u0627\u062a<\/span> above or below the letter, thus it is \u201cstill\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n

When you see the \u00b0 symbol, the letter assigned to it is called a <\/span>saakin<\/span>\/<\/span>\u0633\u0627\u0643\u0650\u0646<\/span> letter. <\/span>saakin<\/span>\/<\/span>\u0633\u0627\u0643\u0650\u0646<\/span> letters cannot start words and they can\u2019t be read alone without a letter before them.<\/span><\/p>\n

In today\u2019s lesson, we will learn the meaning of <\/span>sukoon<\/span>\/<\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0643\u0648\u0646<\/span> in Arabic and how to pronounce it.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Meaning of Sukoon in English and Arabic<\/span><\/h1>\n

In English, <\/span>sukoon<\/span>\/<\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0643\u0648\u0646<\/span> means \u201crest\u201d, \u201cmotionless\u201d, or \u201cease\u201d. In Arabic, it is a vowelless diacritic or symbol that is used above the letter to show that there is no vowel, and does not really represent any sort of grammar. <\/span><\/p>\n

In other words, <\/span>sukoon<\/span>\/<\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0643\u0648\u0646<\/span> is free from any Arabic vowel and remains unchanged when you stop and continue reading in written form and after.<\/span><\/p>\n

Though it is a letter or combination of letters that is not pronounced at the beginning of a word, you can also find <\/span>sukoon<\/span>\/<\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0643\u0648\u0646<\/span> in the middle or at the end of the word. Moreover, it also occurs in phrases and particles, but only at the end of a word. <\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, each one of the Arabic letters can have <\/span>sukoon<\/span>\/<\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0643\u0648\u0646<\/span> and can be written with no vowels on them.<\/span><\/p>\n

How to Pronounce SUKOON<\/span><\/h1>\n

Here is how to pronounce letters with sukoon<\/span>\/<\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0643\u0648\u0646<\/span> :<\/span><\/p>\n

Position<\/span>: when pronouncing <\/span>sukoon<\/span>\/<\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0643\u0648\u0646<\/span>, your tongue should be kept in a neutral position.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pause:<\/span> After saying the sukoon\/<\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0643\u0648\u0646<\/span>, pause for a second. Be sure the pause is a bit shorter than the pause for a <\/span>saakin<\/span>\/<\/span>\u0633\u0627\u0643\u0650\u0646<\/span> letter (non-vowel letter) followed by a consonant.<\/span><\/p>\n

Breath Control<\/span>: <\/span>Once you pause, you want to maintain the reading flow so take a few breaths before going on to the next letter after <\/span>sukoon<\/span>\/<\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0643\u0648\u0646<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Listen to the Professionals<\/span>:<\/span> <\/span>Today, you\u2019ll find many famous reciters of the Quran such as Mishary Rashid Alafasy, Sheikh Sudais, and Saud Shuraim who you can listen to and see how sukoon\/<\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0643\u0648\u0646<\/span> is pronounced. Try to emulate what you hear and reproduce their style.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Practice Makes Perfect:<\/span> Of course, you don\u2019t have to sound exactly like those who have mastered <\/span>the art of <\/b><\/span>Tajweed <\/span>(the rules of reading the Qur\u2019an). However, as they say, if you don\u2019t use it, you\u2019ll lose it, so practice often to improve your Arabic speaking skills. <\/span><\/b><\/p>\n
