Does Arabic use punctuation mark the same way that English does? What\u2019s more, we already know how hard it is to remember where to put a comma in English. Does Arabic follow like rules?<\/p>\n<p>All of these are legitimate punctuation marks to ask when learning to read and write Arabic. The good news is that Arabic punctuation is a lot like punctuation marks in English. Further, as vital as those little speech punctuation marks are when writing Arabic letters, learning Arabic punctuation is just as crucial. Now, let\u2019s begin the lesson, shall we?<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-full-stop\">The Full Stop (.)&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<p>The Arabic full stop (\u0627\u0644\u0646\u0642\u0637\u0629&nbsp;\/ <em>annuqta<\/em>) works much the same way as the full stop in English does. That is, Arabs use the full stop when the meaning of the sentence is complete. For example:<\/p>\n<p>\u064a\u062d\u0628 \u062a\u0634\u0627\u0631\u0644\u064a \u0644\u0639\u0628 \u0627\u0644\u0628\u064a\u0633\u0628\u0648\u0644.<\/p>\n<p><em>yuhibu tisharli laeib albisbul.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Charlie likes to play baseball.<\/p>\n<p>As you can see, just as in English, the meaning of the sentence is complete, so we use a full stop.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-question-mark\">Question Mark&nbsp;(\u061f)<\/h2>\n<p>Again, Arabs use the Arabic question mark (\u0639\u0644\u0627\u0645\u0629 \u0627\u0644\u0627\u0633\u062a\u0641\u0647\u0627\u0645&nbsp;\/ <em>alaamatul istifhaam<\/em>) just like the &nbsp;English. That is, Arabs use the question mark in Arabic at the end of the sentence when asking a question. However, it is backward, as shown above. It is also not upside side down like the Spanish question mark.<\/p>\n<p>\u0645\u062a\u0649 \u064a\u062d\u064a\u0646 \u0639\u064a\u062f \u0645\u064a\u0644\u0627\u062f\u0643\u061f<\/p>\n<p><em>mataa yahin eid miladiki?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When is your birthday?<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-exclamation-mark\">Exclamation Mark (!)&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<p>Arabs use the Arabic exclamation point (\u0639\u0644\u0627\u0645\u0629 \u0627\u0644\u062a\u0639\u062c\u0628&nbsp;\/ <em>alaamatu-ttaa\u2019jub<\/em>) to express surprise. Like the Arabic question mark, speakers of Arabic write the Arabic exclamation mark backward, as shown above.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">\u0644\u0642\u062f \u0627\u062c\u062a\u0632\u062a \u0627\u0644\u0627\u0645\u062a\u062d\u0627\u0646\u0627\u062a \u0628\u0639\u0644\u0627\u0645\u0627\u062a \u0643\u0627\u0645\u0644\u0629!<\/p>\n<p><em>laqad ajtazt aliamtihanat biealamat kamilatin!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I passed the exams with full marks!<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-comma\">The Comma&nbsp;(\u060c)&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<p>Notice that Arabs use inverted commas (\u0627\u0644\u0641\u0627\u0635\u0644\u0629 \/ <em>al faasila<\/em>).&nbsp; That is, it\u2019s upside-down and backward when compared to the comma in English. Some say it looks like a \u201c6\u201d whereas the English comma looks like a \u201c9\u201d. You could also say it is the \u201cyin\u201d to the English \u201cyang\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Still, it\u2019s used after \u201cyes\u201d \u0646\u0639\u0645 or \u201cno\u201d \u0644\u0627\u060c \u0643\u0644\u0627&nbsp;or \u0628\u0644\u0649. For example:<\/p>\n<p>\u062c\u0648\u0646: \u0647\u0644 \u062a\u062d\u062f\u062b\u062a \u0645\u0639 \u0632\u064a\u0646\u0628 \u0645\u0624\u062e\u0631\u064b\u0627\u061f<\/p>\n<p>\u062a\u0634\u0627\u0631\u0644\u064a: \u0646\u0639\u0645 \u060c \u0644\u0642\u062f \u062a\u062d\u062f\u062b\u062a \u0645\u0639\u0647\u0627 \u0647\u0630\u0627 \u0627\u0644\u0635\u0628\u0627\u062d.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>jun<\/em><\/strong><em>: hal tahadatht mae zaynab mwkhran<\/em><em>\u061f<\/em><em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>tisharli<\/em><\/strong><em>: naeam, laqad tahadatht maeaha hadha alsabahi.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>John<\/strong>: Have you talked to Zainab lately?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Charlie<\/strong>: Yes, I talked to her this morning.<\/p>\n<p>Arabs also use a comma when calling someone else in Arabic use \u201c<em>ya<\/em>\u201d before the name of the person. It\u2019s equal to \u201cHey\u201d with the comma placed after the person\u2019s name as in the following:<\/p>\n<p>\u064a\u0627 \u0623\u062d\u0645\u062f\u060c \u062f\u0639\u0646\u064a \u0623\u0633\u062a\u0639\u064a\u0631 \u062f\u0631\u0627\u062c\u062a\u0643.<\/p>\n<p><em>ya Ahmad, daeni \u2018astaeir daraajataka.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Hey Ahmad, let me borrow your bicycle.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-quotation-marks\">Quotation Marks&nbsp;(\u201c\u201d)<\/h2>\n<p>Just as they are in English, double quotation marks (\u0639\u0644\u0627\u0645\u062a\u0627 \u0627\u0644\u062a\u0646\u0635\u064a\u0635\/ <em>alaamata attansees<\/em>) are used in Arabic at the start and end of quoted speech.<\/p>\n<p>\u0642\u0627\u0644 \u0628\u0646\u062c\u0627\u0645\u064a\u0646 \u0641\u0631\u0627\u0646\u0643\u0644\u064a\u0646 \u060c \u201c\u062a\u0641\u0627\u062d\u0629 \u0641\u064a \u0627\u0644\u064a\u0648\u0645 \u062a\u063a\u0646\u064a\u0643 \u0639\u0646 \u0627\u0644\u0637\u0628\u064a\u0628.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>qal binjamin frankilin , \u201ctifahat fi alyawm tughnik ean altabibi.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Benjamin Franklin said, \u201cAn apple a day keeps the doctor away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(Notice that, unlike English, the verb comes first when quoting someone with the actual translation being, \u201cSaid Benjamin Franklin\u2026\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to single quotation marks, again, like English the quotation marks symbols are only used when quoting within a quote. (You\u2019ll notice that the Arabic semicolon is also upside down and backwards.)
