Soaking All of That Arabic In<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Immersion is defined\u00a0is the act of dipping something in a substance, completely covering it, either physically or metaphorically. \u00a0However, that advice about moving to another country for total immersion is only half-right. While it\u2019s true mastering the Arabic accent does involve complete immersion into the language, you don\u2019t have to set up home halfway around the world to do it. Listen Up<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The most important skill in mastering the art of conversation is not actually speaking skills, but listening skills. This is also true of mastering the Arabic accent. Listening is a skill, and it\u2019s critical to learning a new language. After all, nobody can give you an actual Arabic accent description. In other words, stop listening to others as they try to figure out how to describe an Arabic accent to you. Rather, find ways to listen to that accent for yourself. Watching Arabic videos, listening to audiobooks in Arabic, or finding Arabic language partners online are great places to start.<\/p>\n

Lather, Rinse, Repeat<\/strong><\/h2>\n

When you start learning Arabic, you\u2019ll no doubt run into some sounds that you\u2019ve never heard in your native language.\u00a0 As a result, they may seem like a bit of an obstacle. However, the more you practice pronouncing that sound, the easier it will be overcoming that obstacle. \u00a0This is why repetition is so important.<\/p>\n

As you learn more words and their sounds, make a list of those that you\u2019re having a harder time pronouncing <\/a>properly. Afterward, stay focused on these words and repeat them until your pronunciation is perfect.<\/p>\n

In fact, the best time to start is right at the beginning with the Arabic alphabet. Once you\u2019ve discovered which letters are giving you the hardest time, repeat the sounds of those letters as much as you can. In no time at all, you\u2019ll find that you\u2019re pronouncing those words and letters like you\u2019ve been speaking Arabic all your life.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t Flatter Yourself with All Your Book Learning<\/strong><\/h2>\n

We\u2019re sure you\u2019re familiar with the old saying \u201cImitation is the sincerest form of flattery\u201d. So, don\u2019t flatter yourself \u2013 flatter others by imitating the way they speak.<\/p>\n

Even with all of that book learning you\u2019ve been doing, you\u2019re probably not going to master the Arabic accent all by your lonesome self. We mean, how will you know if you\u2019ve been pronouncing those words correctly just by reading from a book? Therefore, you\u2019re going to have to make sure you\u2019re pronouncing those words like a native. How?<\/p>\n

Well, as you practice your listening skills, listen for all of those little changes in tone and other subtle nuances. Then do your best to imitate it.\u00a0 Same goes if you\u2019re practicing along with TV shows or films. Imitate the way they are saying certain words and phrases and repeat them just as you hear them over and over again.<\/p>\n

Some people even go as far as recording themselves. This way they can make sure what comes out of their mouth sounds the same as what\u2019s in their head.<\/p>\n

Use It or Lose It<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Mastering the Arabic accent marks a great achievement in your Arabic language journey. However, that doesn\u2019t mean that once you\u2019ve seemed to get the accent down pat, you can rest on your laurels. After all, improving your accent is not a passive activity.<\/p>\n

They say that once you\u2019ve learned how to ride a bike you never forget. You could not have ridden a bike for 25 years, but still get on one and ride like you just rode it yesterday.<\/p>\n

However, language doesn\u2019t work like that. With language, you have to actively use it on a regular basis or you\u2019re going to forget how to speak it \u2013 accent and all. In other words, if you don\u2019t use it, you\u2019ll lose it.<\/p>\n

This means that you have to find a native speaker to practice your Arabic with and constantly test yourself \u2013 always!<\/p>\n
